The Louisiana State University Health Shreveport (LSUHS) training program in colon and rectal surgery is an ACGME accredited fellowship accepting one training candidate per year. We provide compassionate, high quality, state-of-the-art care for patients with diseases and conditions of the colon, rectum, and anus.
Through the LSUHS Fellowship Program, we have prepared dozens of general surgeons to become board-certified surgeons in our specialty. They are accomplished surgeons and practice in both academic and private practice settings across the country — find out where they are now.

Colon and Rectal Associates has a long history of achieving groundbreaking milestones in the state of Louisiana and leadership in our field locally, regionally and nationally. The founder of our program, Dr. H. Whitney Boggs, was president of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS) 1986-1987. Our faculty members continue to serve on regional and national committees within ASCRS and ACS.
Our continuous focus is providing the highest standard of care; the latest research and technology; advanced procedures; and, comprehensive training to help us deliver the very best outcomes for our patients and the specialty.
Endoscopy:
Colon and Rectal Associates performed our 1st colonoscopy in 1974, which was the first colonoscopy performed in North Louisiana. We now complete approximately 2,000 endoscopic procedures per year. Advanced endoscopic technologies are critical in the examination, diagnosis and treatment of the colon and rectum.
Minimally Invasive Surgery:
Our faculty performed the first minimally invasive colon resection in North Louisiana in 1992. We continue to provide minimally invasive options to our patients which result in faster recovery and reduced hospital stays. Three of our former fellows are recognized by Intuitive as leaders in robotic colon and rectal surgery utilizing the da Vinci system.
Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM):
Our highly trained surgeons offer the most specialized, advanced procedures — like the minimally invasive TEM system — that allow our patients with benign and early malignant rectal lesions an option to avoid more morbid, traditional surgical procedures.
Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS):
Since 1994, we’ve pioneered ERAS programs — which, paired with minimally invasive surgery, have become the standard of care in the field of colon and rectal surgery. ERAS programs help ensure the best outcomes for our patients, including shortened hospital stays, fewer complications and higher patient satisfaction.
